Summary

This book written by Kabir and Surishtha Sehgal talks about the celebration of sibling hood on Raksha Bandhan, an Indian holiday. It's a day where sisters create traditional thread bracelets [rakhi] for their brothers and in return the brothers promise to treat them well. Inspired by the classic tune of Frere Jacques's Are You Sleeping as a sing-song text, the two sisters in this book makes their brother a rakhi and in exchange he gifts them presents and delicious sweets. At the end of the book, this tradition is seen to be celebrated globally on every continent, not only between siblings, but family and friends too. Because the thread of love is what connects us all.

Teacher Evaluation

I had a fun time reading this book because of the familiar tune by Frere Jacques
. It helped me go through the book quickly but at the same time I was able to learn about a new culture. The illustrations and colors do a great job in presenting Indian culture and the love between siblings and people worldwide. It was cool to see a piece of thread flowing through each page and eventually making a heart at the end. I would definitely use this book in my classroom during a culture unit and think it would be suitable for students from Pre-k to 1st grade. Instead of reading it, I would sing the text. The tune of the song is repetitive, so it'll help students better remember Indian culture presented in this book. A fun art project that students can do after this read aloud is create their own rakhi and gift it to someone special. There are directions on the back of the book, so that'll be very helpful before crafting. If time allows, we can reread it and sing it together at the end of class.
