Summary
This book written by Faith McNulty teaches about space exploration, specifically about the moon, and it is aimed at those who wish to take a trip to space. It starts off by showing a boy on Earth getting ready for his space trip, as he packs up his necessities to take with him. The story progresses to the boy in the spaceship blasting off to space and shows what he experiences inside for the next 2 days. Once he reaches the moon, he takes on an exploration learning about the history and science of space and the moon. After some time of exploring he heads for his spaceship to go back to Earth. As he is landing, he sees all the animals and the beautiful nature Earth has to offer. He learns that what makes Earth unique from the other planets is life. There is life because Earth has water, air, plants. He realizes that we must protect this precious Earth.
Evaluation -Would I Incorporate this book in the Classroom?
I absolutely love this book. This book talks about space exploration. The illustrations are wonderful, as it made me feel like I'm in space or I'm the one exploring space. It has a nice progressing rate starting from Earth and slowly ascending to the moon or space. It takes me with the character step-by-step. I do see myself using this book in the classroom. This book recommends for ages 4-8, but I see myself using it to grade 4 and 5 as well. This book will be great to read in science, specifically a unit on space. It not only entertain readers, but it also informs readers about space with mainly facts. During or after reading I can create a fill in the blank science worksheet that students can fill out as we read. Students can then glue it in their notebook as notes. For younger elementary kids I can ask them questions, as if they're the character in the book going to space. Some examples would be What would you be excited to see if you went to the moon, What would you be scared to see, or What would you miss the most from Earth? I also like how towards the end of the book as the character is going back to Earth, the book incorporates a little bit of social studies like the continents and the animals as well, teaching kids why we should protect the things that makes Earth unique. This book will be great in many subjects.
