Summary
This book written by Carole Lindstrom talks about a girl who brings awareness and encourages her people and others to protect the water. Water is sacred, as it gives us life and connects us all. Gathering everyone together, they're standing up for Earth's water, the people, their land, and all the animals that can't speak up for themselves. As one, they are fighting against the black snake [oil pipeline or other environmental threats] that is slithering within the bodies of water, destroying it and anything that is in its way. This battle will be a tough one, but together as water protectors, the snake should be ready to fight for its life.
Evaluation - Would I Incorporate this book in the classroom?
I truly enjoyed reading this book. The message behind this book is relevant to today's issues, with the oil pipelines that are installed in our waters. The illustrations are wonderful as well. The mix of colors are vibrant and goes so well together, truly bringing the book alive. I would definitely use this book for a fun read aloud in the classroom for kids in Kinder to 1st Grade. It'll be great for students to learn about the impact we have in our environment and how we can come together as a community to change it. So, a fun activity that students can do is create a list of how they can help the environment. Some examples can be no littering in our beaches, conserve water/energy, recycle, plant a tree, or spread awareness and educate others. And students can either pick all or pick one to do within the week. Then, at the end of the worksheet, students can draw one thing they'd want to protect and write 3 sentences on why they want to protect it.
