Summary

In this vertical format book written by Cindy Trumbore and Susan L. Roth, talks about the brief history of Puerto Rico, as well as the Puerto Rican Parrots that lived in it. However, these birds nearly became extinct due to the foreign explorations in their islands, where many sought after them and along the way destroyed their habitat. After a while, people soon realized that these birds were decreasing as time go by. So, a group of scientists worked together to try and save these birds from going into extinction. With this book, Cindy and Susan depicts the efforts that these scientists do to save these birds through their Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Program.

Evaluation - Would I Incorporate this book in the classroom?

I would have to say, I had fun reading this book. The colors, illustrations, and vertical format were so beautiful and unique. It did a great job in bringing awareness in keeping these birds safe. The grade levels that I think is most appropriate based on this book would be from 3rd to 6th grade, but can still be used in higher grade levels as well.  I think it's a great book to use if I were to teach my students about the history of Puerto Rico. There are also a great number of vocabulary words that are important for students to know when we talk about geography, so students can do vocabulary matching during the unit. And afterwards, we as a class can have discussions about the book and how it connects to the world today. This book would also be useful for a science unit. For example, it mentions deforestation, extinction, and hunting. So, with this book I can then expand it over to why no littering, recycling, and saving wildlife is important to our future. Students can do a fun activity where they are able to plant a seed and bring it home with them using recycled items. If this book was used in art, students can create their own parrots through collage.
