Summary

This book written and illustrated by Gerald McDermott talks about a blue coyote who is always out looking for trouble. He is so nosy that he follows his nose to find something to do, leading him to trouble. He's got bitten by a badger, caught on fire from the woodpecker, and being coiled by a snake. If that wasn't enough, the Coyote then saw some crows and wanted to fly just like them. The crows took this opportunity to mess with him because they knew he was foolish thinking like that. They gave Coyote their plucked feathers and stuck it in his fur. As they did this and tried to "fly," Coyote was injured every time, falling onto the ground.  The crows soon grew tired of Coyote so they took all their feathers back and left him. As he fell his tail caught on fire and tumbled in the dirt. Today the Coyotes are grey in color and has a black tipped tail, due to its pass, but they are still looking for trouble!

Evaluation - Would I Incorporate this in Classroom?

This book was different to what I'm used to reading. The colors are bright and vibrant and this type of story is new to me. I don't think I've ever a read a trickster tales book, usually told as a tradition by Native Americans. I didn't know that books that talk about the formation of why animals look the way they do existed, but this book was pretty good as my first one. I can see myself reading this book in my class for fun to students, going all the way to middle school grade levels. But if I wanted to I can tell students to create a story map of either B.M.E or something about characters, setting, problem, and solution. I can also see this book being connected to science. Since most of the characters in this book are animals, I can read this book to the students before teaching them about Coyotes for example. The students can pick an animal of their choice and do research on it such as its diet, characteristics, habitat, life expectancy, etc.
