Summary
This picture book written by Alice Dalgliesh tells the story of the Hopkins family and their 3 kids boarding the overpacked Mayflower ship going from England to America in order to start a new life. As they are on board, Giles, Constance, and Damaris' baby brother Oceanus was born and things became a little more hectic. Once they've arrived, the Pilgrims all faced hunger, the cold weather, and sickness. The Native Americans saw this and offered to help. With their help, the Pilgrims were able to survive their first year in North America. And together the Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated the first Thanksgiving.
Evaluation - Would I incorporate this book in the classroom?
This book was a pretty interesting read. Although it was written such a long time ago, it still does a great job in teaching kids the basic history of Thanksgiving. I am not really a fan of the illustrations as I felt like the colors were out of place. But I do see myself using this book in the classroom and the appropriate grade levels would be 1st to 3rd grade. This book can be read during the week before their thanksgiving break, so they can get the idea of what Thanksgiving is about. In the real history of Thanksgiving, there are definitely more graphic things that happened, but she does a great job of not going into detail keeping it appropriate for classroom use. Since then, there has been newer and updated Thanksgiving books, so it'll also be nice to read this book alongside another one so children can have different perspectives.
