Summary

This book written by Lily Williams explores the importance of why we need sharks in our oceans. They may seem scary to most, but just like other animals big or small, each play an important role. Sharks have existed for 450 million years at the top of the food chain and today they still continue to help keep the ecosystem in balance. Unfortunately, like many other animals, sharks are vulnerable to extinction due to overfishing. The book then goes into realistic scenarios that may happen if sharks did disappear, which will eventually affect us and other inland wildlife. Towards the end of the book, the author reminds us that we as living organisms connect in some way and if we work together, the planet in which we call home will continue to flourish.

Evaluation - Would I Incorporate this book in the classroom?

This book was so entertaining to read and I enjoyed it a lot. I love how the book started in the ocean and slowly move onto life on land. I also really liked the illustrations of the animals and love how she used two pages for her pictures, making these animals feel huge. Another important thing that this book has, is a glossary on the back. This will be very useful for students to use if they get stuck on a word, they're unfamiliar with. I would definitely use this book in my classroom for kindergarten to 3rd grade, to teach about the food chain. This book did a great job in teaching readers about how the food chain works, without being too direct about it. The pictures also help students visualize this concept a little better. So, after reading this book students will create an ocean food chain on a big piece of paper, based on the information given in this book. After they learn about ocean life, I will soon move onto life on land and they will create the food chain for that as well.
